How Long Does a Car Service Take?
One of the most common questions we hear at Pickwell Autohub is how long a car service will take. The answer depends on the type of service, the make and model of your vehicle, and whether we discover anything that needs additional attention. Here is a realistic guide so you can plan your visit to our Reading garages.
Interim service: 1 to 2 hours
An interim service at /services/interim-service is the quickest scheduled maintenance option. It typically includes an oil and filter change, fluid level checks, tyre inspection, brake check, and lights and wiper assessment. For most cars, allow one to two hours. Many customers drop their vehicle off on a Saturday morning and collect it before lunch.
Full service: 3 to 4 hours
A full service at /services/full-service is more comprehensive. Beyond the interim checks, it includes a thorough brake inspection, battery and charging system test, suspension and steering check, and a full safety inspection with a digital report. Most vehicles take three to four hours. If you are combining a full service with an MOT at /services/mot-testing, allow a full morning or afternoon.
Major service: 4 to 5 hours
A major service at /services/major-service adds replacement of additional wear items: spark plugs (on petrol engines), air filter, pollen filter, and brake fluid. It is the most thorough scheduled maintenance and typically takes four to five hours. We recommend booking early in the day so technicians have ample time to complete every item without rushing.
Factors that can extend the duration
Certain vehicles take longer due to engine layout, sump plug accessibility, or manufacturer-specific procedures. If we find worn brakes at /services/brake-repairs, a leaking hose, or a fault code during inspection, we will contact you with a quote before proceeding — which adds time but saves a second visit. We never carry out additional work without your approval.
MOT duration
For comparison, a standard MOT test takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. While-you-wait MOT appointments are available at both our RG1 and RG2 branches. Book your MOT and service together at /booking to minimise disruption.
Making the most of your appointment
Drop your car off with a quarter tank of fuel, clear personal items from the cabin, and share any concerns with our reception team — unusual noises, warning lights, or recent changes in handling. The more we know upfront, the more efficiently we can inspect your vehicle. Book online at /booking in around sixty seconds.
